We are partnering with a highly regarded geopolitical advisory firm to appoint a Director with deep China expertise, at a pivotal moment in the evolution of its China capability.
This is a rare opportunity for a senior China specialist with meaningful, on-the-ground experience in China to play a central role in establishing and shaping the firm’s China offering. The successful candidate will help define the strategic direction and positioning of the China practice, with a particular focus on macroeconomic conditions, policy dynamics, and geopolitical risk.
The Director will operate at the intersection of geopolitical insight, macroeconomic analysis, and senior client engagement, translating political, economic, and policy developments inside China into clear, decision-relevant insight for investors, corporates, and other strategic stakeholders.
Role Overview
• Serve as a senior China specialist, providing forward-looking insight on China’s macroeconomic environment, political dynamics, industrial policy, and global economic footprint, grounded in first-hand experience
• Develop and deliver original China-focused analysis across written briefings, presentations, and live client discussions
• Act as a core contributor to China-related advisory mandates, supporting the structuring and execution of bespoke client work
• Work closely with senior leadership to help build, position, and scale the China advisory capability, including shaping coverage priorities and analytical frameworks
• Partner with senior leadership on client engagement across multiple sectors, including investment, supply chain, and strategic planning
• Track and assess emerging China-related risks and opportunities within the broader macroeconomic and geopolitical landscape
• Engage regularly with external experts, policymakers, and senior advisors to refine and stress-test analysis
• Contribute to internal capability-building, including knowledge development, mentoring junior team members, and supporting recruitment as the China practice grows
Required Background
• 8–10 years of professional experience with a strong focus on China, gained in advisory, consulting, policy, research, or relevant private-sector roles
• Meaningful on-the-ground experience in China, with a practical understanding of how political, policy, and regulatory processes function in practice
• Deep familiarity with China’s political economy, macroeconomic policy framework, and regulatory environment
• Proven ability to link macroeconomic and policy analysis to real-world business, investment, and risk decisions
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, including experience briefing senior audiences
• Experience managing multiple workstreams and delivering to tight timelines
• Fluency in English; working proficiency in Mandarin Chinese required (native or near-native Mandarin preferred)
• High levels of discretion, judgment, and professionalism
• Degree and/or postgraduate qualification in Economics, International Affairs, Public Policy, or a related discipline
